Edward Lim KingYuan, MSc Business Analytics (online, part-time) student and LGBTQ+ Scholarship recipient, shares his experience of successfully securing the scholarship and his advice for future applicants.
Imperial College Business School’s LGBTQ+ Scholarship is awarded to students who are a part of, or allies to, the LGBTQ+ community and show a commitment to promoting diversity and inclusion relating to the community. Recipients are known to drive initiatives to encourage LGBTQ+ participation in business education.
I sought an institution with strong industry connections that offers substantial exposure to real-world business applications in its programmes. I decided that MSc Business Analytics (online, part-time) at Imperial College Business School was the perfect place to pursue this goal.
The programme offers a unique blend of industry analytics applications, business strategy and technology, which aligns perfectly with my career aspirations in data-driven decision-making. Additionally, Imperial’s global perspective has provided me invaluable industry connections.
This scholarship has meant a great deal – not only on a personal level but also for the LGBTQ+ community, where equity has been given to people like me to pursue my own professional dreams. This opportunity has broken traditional marginalisation and glass ceilings.
When I found out I had secured the scholarship, I felt an overwhelming sense of gratitude and imposter syndrome. However, I recognised that it was a validation of the effort and determination I had put into my work and the application process. I felt heartened that the Business School had an opportunity like this and chose me, which gave me a huge boost of confidence beyond just the financial support.
As someone who is passionate about promoting equality, diversity and inclusion as well as breaking down barriers for marginalised communities, this scholarship meant more than just financial support. This scholarship provided a platform for individuals like me, and others to pursue their academic and professional goals, while contributing to the ongoing fight for equity and inclusion in society.
We have progressed far in terms of LGBTQ+ rights, but we still need to be constantly advocating for equity in education and workplaces. This award empowers me to inspire others to follow their aspirations without fear of discrimination.
Academically, it will provide the financial resources necessary for me to focus fully on my studies, allowing me to engage more deeply with the curriculum and pursue research or extracurricular activities without the burden of financial stress.
Personally, this scholarship represents recognition of my identity and values, encouraging me to continue advocating for diversity and inclusion in my field. It will also give me the confidence and platform to contribute more meaningfully to the LGBTQ+ community, both inside and outside of my academic journey.
I personally think that leadership, academic excellence, and a clear sense of purpose are tremendous qualities to demonstrate. I believe the committees look for candidates who are excelling academically but are also impactful in various areas and bring diverse perspectives to the table.
Balancing scholarship applications with work required careful planning and time management. I set clear timelines for each part of the application process and dedicated specific time during the week to work on answering interview questions and preparing drafts. Prioritising tasks and staying organised was key to managing both my academic responsibilities and scholarship applications successfully.
My advice is to be fearlessly authentic. Be in control of your narrative and be clear about your goals. Think about how you’ll use the opportunity to make meaningful contributions to Imperial College Business School and beyond. Consider your achievements in life so far, and tailor your application with care to let your unique story shine through.
Imperial College Business School is committed to creating an inclusive environment for all, as part of this we’re proud to offer scholarships for students who are members of the LGBTQ+ community.
