For 42 years Dereck Whittenburg has worn his NC State basketball national championship ring when he, Jimmy V and the Wolfpack beat Houston in 83. While Dereck hasn't been a player for quite some time now, his basketball skills transitioned in 2015 to a bigger cause calling his name to give back by starting the DW Foundation.
Which focuses on supporting financial relief for college students who have no idea Dereck was apart of the final play in the 1983 Natty where his shot fell short but Lorenzo Charles on the putback for the title with Jimmy V running. Dereck and his wife Jacqueline started the foundation 10 years ago where holding up 10 thousand dollars to give away on a human size check has become normal.
He had two today with one going to the nurses of Carolina East and Craven Community College following his celebrity Golf Invitational from the fall. A decade later from its humble beginnings, Dereck had a chance to reflect on the impact he and his wife have made on students in New Bern and beyond.
Now that's a good lookin ring over 200 scholarships and a million dollars in donations the DW Foundation just continues to make a difference.
On the topic of NC State, Number 14 Wolfpack hosted 10th ranked Duke in Reynolds Coliseum where the start, middle and finish belonged to Aziaha James. The stepback triple, oh yeah, Pak trailed by 11 at halftime. No worries, a career high 36 points for the Number 10 who pulled off this filthy fake on the defender for the wide open layup. One more look, dirty like a Sabrina Carpenter song as the pack surge late and knock off the Blue Devils 89–83.
In high school women's basketball, the 16–1 Northside Panthers hosted the 17–2 Pamlico Hurricanes. Panthers were dominant in the first half, leading 28–10 courtesy of some nice deep range shooting from Olivia Jane Cahoon. So head coach April Rose gives her canes a stern talking to. Must have worked in the 3rd quarter, finding a little spark behind Julia Bain, then some lockdown full court defense by Bella-Ann Shulz turning the steal into two points. Michelle leathers gave her team the three things her Panthers needed to close out the fourth and they did. Northside wins 61–33 and Coach Leathers said after why this team has been so successful.
The 4–15 Hurricane men were looking for a big upset on conference leader northside at 14–3. Malachi Moore rifled off to a fast start, first the jumper, then the triple, oh and his teammates poke away turnover led to the layup, contributing 7 points to the Panthers 12–0 start. Interim head coach Keith Reese trying to get something out of his canes, Tariq Barber with a man falling on top of him finishes the and one. Jared Adams wasn't a fan of that and neither was his team who carried on their dominant play in the second half for a 77–35 victory.
In addition to Northside Pamlico, Richlands at West Carteret, and Northside Jacksonville at South Central.
And big news out of Martin County who announced their new head football coach tonight is John Wheeler. Wheeler previously served as the linebacker coach at UNC Pembroke. was a head coach at Currituck County for a few years where he went to high school and also coached and graduated from Chowan. He's got deep roots in North Carolina and excited to see where he takes the Gators next season.
