WICHITA, Kan. (KWCH) – Since 2022, Kapaun High School graduate Henry Thengvall has been suiting up for the Shockers as a walk-on, solely for the opportunity at his dream. On Thursday though, his days as a walk-on ended as Wichita State head coach Paul Mills surprised Thengvall in front of his teammates with the news that he would be becoming a scholarship player.
“He’s not on scholarship, he doesn’t have to do this,” Mills said in a video posted on social media of the moment. “He just shows up day after day. But today is Henry’s last day of being a walk-on.”
Thengvall was a first-team all-class player his senior season at Kapaun and a long-time Wichita State fan. He said that even before his new-found scholarship, he wouldn’t trade his time as a Shocker.
“I just try to come in and work hard every day,” he said. “Coach Mills is great. Being here the last three years, it’s just been a blessing really. I’m really grateful to everyone who’s helped me out along the way.”
