The 24th annual Willie Stewart Community Service Scholarship has honored 15 Pierce County high school seniors who demonstrated a commitment to volunteering in their community. 
This year’s cohort hails from high schools across the county, including Annie Wright Schools, Curtis Senior High School, Emerald Ridge High School, Graham-Kapowsin High School, Harrison Prep, Lincoln High School, Mount Tahoma High School, Sound Christian Academy, Sumner High School, Stadium High School, and Steilacoom High School. 
Each recipient received a $2,500 scholarship to help pay tuition at colleges and universities across the country. The 15 students performed more than 8,740 combined hours of community service.

For all 24 years of the scholarship’s existence, United Way of Pierce County has supported the scholarship program and partnered with Willie Stewart, an educator, veteran, and community leader, a release said. Stewart and his friend, Karl Anderson, started the program after Stewart ran for the Tacoma School Board in 1999. In 2000, the program honored its first cohort of seniors.
