WINONA – The Winona Ruritan Club held its annual steak fry at the Salem Saxon Club Tuesday, June 25.
President Rob Doyle Jr. called the meeting to order shortly after 7 p.m. and led the group in the singing of “America.” Homer Althouse gave the invocation.
Doyle Jr. and other members Rob Donaldson and Tom Sanor BBQ’d the tender loin steaks that came from a Japanese cattle breed called Wagu and chicken breasts. The caterer served sides of red skinned potatoes, green beans with bacon bits, hard crusted bread with butter, tossed vegetable salad, iced tea, ice water and ice cream sundeas with brownie bits, chocolate and/or butterscotch syrup. Everyone present gave the grillers and caterer a round of applause.
Secretary E. Lee Stamp called the roll of members, with 16 being present and 25 guests. Bruce Marhefka made a motion to dispense with the monthly secretary and treasurer’s reports.
As part of the club’s monthly tradition of singing Happy Birthday to members born in each month, the club celebrated birthdays for Tony Russo and Bobby King, as well as guests Judy Doyle, LeAnn Firestone, Sarah McDevitt and Caron Richey. The club also recognized wedding anniversaries for this year: Homer and Marilyn Althouse, 65 years; Bob and Judy Doyle, 60 years; Bruce and Ruth Marhefka, 57 years; Dennis and Carol McArthur, 57 years; and Tony and Beverly Russo, 55 years.
A big part of the June meeting is the awarding of the club’s college scholarships, of which the club has granted four. Doyle Jr. asked the awardees to come forward and provide an explanation of their future plans. Piper Richey, daughter of club Vice President Tom Richey, will be attending Duquesne University with plans to study sports broadcasting; Emma McDevitt, daughter of member Jason McDevitt, will be attending the University of Akron with plans to study audiology; Dallas Boyd, great-grandson of Past President Homer Huprich, will be attending the National Aviation Academy to study aviation. The fourth awardee, Kade Pasco, was on vacation and will be given his scholarship at the July meeting.
Doyle Jr. asked everyone to stand and recite the Pledge of Allegiance. He then introduced the entertainment for the evening, Fred Naragon and his Sugartree Alley Steel Drum Band.
