How are the Badgers looking on scholarships with their recent commitments?
The Wisconsin Badgers made a couple of additions to their roster recently, adding size with 2025 three-star Will Garlock and 2024 Serbian freshman Andrija Vukovic.
Wisconsin had long been looking for a big man depth piece this offseason to fill their final scholarship spot, and did so with Vukovic, who comes to Madison from overseas.
Garlock, on the other hand, is an in-state center from Middleton whom the Badgers had long been targeting in the 2025 class.
With the two in the fold, how does Wisconsin’s scholarship distribution look for the next two years.
Point Guards (3): Camren Hunter (junior), Kamari McGee (senior), Daniel Freitag (freshman)
Shooting Guards (2): Max Klesmit (senior), John Blackwell (sophomore)
Small Forwards (2): John Tonje (senior), Jack Robison (freshman)
Power Forwards (3): Markus Illver (senior), Xavier Amos (junior), Nolan Winter (sophomore)
Centers (3): Steven Crowl (senior), Chris Hodges (junior), Andrija Vukovic (freshman)
The Badgers have a much different roster outlook in 2024 after losing seven players from a season ago, be it due to eligibility or the transfer portal.
To bolster the team, Wisconsin added junior guard Camren Hunter, senior wing John Tonje, and junior forward Xavier Amos via the transfer portal, while bringing in freshmen Daniel Freitag, Jack Robison, and Andrija Vukovic.
Wisconsin did create a scholarship spot, presumably by placing Carter Gilmore as a walk-on, which opened up the opportunity to add Vukovic, who seems primed to take over the backup center role in 2024.
As a result, Nolan Winter slides into the power forward spot, where he can serve as the backup there, which may be a better long-term fit, given his frame and shooting ability.
Wisconsin has a ton of guard depth, with five players that should see ample opportunity this season, and now have a set roster for 2024.
Point Guards (2): Camren Hunter (senior), Daniel Freitag (sophomore)
Shooting Guards (2): John Blackwell (junior), Zach Kinziger (freshman)
Small Forwards (1): Jack Robison (sophomore)
Power Forwards (2): Xavier Amos (senior), Nolan Winter (junior)
Centers (3): Chris Hodges (junior), Andrija Vukovic (sophomore), Will Garlock (freshman)
Wisconsin has a huge senior class that will depart after the 2024 season, with Kamari McGee, Max Klesmit, John Tonje, Markus Illver, and Steven Crowl all out of eligibility.
They currently have two commits in their 2025 recruiting class: guard Zach Kinziger and center Will Garlock, leaving them with 10 projected scholarship players at the moment.
I expect Wisconsin to add at least one more freshman to their 2025 class, which would leave them still with two open scholarship spots, and that’s before the transfer portal.
Looking ahead, Wisconsin will still have Hunter and Amos, who came to Madison with two years of eligibility, while younger players like Blackwell, Freitag, and potentially even Vukovic would be expected to step into bigger roles.
But, from the initial outlook, expect a transfer portal spree yet again with the open scholarship spots, which seems to be the new norm in college basketball.
