INDIANAPOLIS (WANE) — Indiana high school students can now earn state-funded scholarships of up to $5,000 to seek work-based learning opportunities, according to Allen County lawmakers.
Under the Career Scholarship Account (CSA) program, 10th, 11th and 12th grade students enrolled in an Indiana Department of Education-approved course or experience can apply for one of 2,000 scholarships by the Oct. 1 deadline. If awarded the scholarship, students can use the funds, distributed in four installments, towards applied and work-based learning experiences such as apprenticeships, career or technical education, obtaining credentials, college courses and related expenses.
State Rep. Martin Carbaugh (R-Fort Wayne) said the scholarship offers students a stepping stone to future opportunities.
“CSAs give students exposure to sought-after careers and the opportunity to skill up,” Carbaugh said. “An apprenticeship or similar experience can be a great starting point for young Hoosiers to achieve future success.”
State Rep. Dave Heine (R-Fort Wayne) said CSAs can teach students valuable skills needed for the workforce, jumpstarting their careers.
“Earn and learn opportunities teach students invaluable skills for life and the workforce,” Heine said. “These scholarships can be a launchpad for students to start a career and I encourage eligible students to apply.”
State Rep. Chris Judy (R-Fort Wayne) said CSA’s are beneficial for both students attending college and students entering the workforce alike.
“Whether students pursue college or enter the workforce, the training opportunities offered by the CSA program pave the way for a promising future for young Hoosiers,” Judy said. “Earning certifications and credentials during high school will put these students ahead of others when choosing their career path.”
State Rep. Bob Morris (R-Fort Wayne) said classes in a variety of subjects and hands-on experiences can set students up for success in the workforce.
“With applications now open for Career Scholarship Accounts, high school students who want to explore a career should consider applying,” Morris said. “Having hands-on work experience at a young age can help set them up for success after graduation.”
