This year, the Tri-Agency Council (NSERC, SSHRC, CIHR) have announced new rules for doctoral grant applications, now called Canada Graduate Research Scholarships – Doctoral. In addition to a name change, there’s also a new, earlier deadline! If you’re applying for a CGRS-D, your application will be due September 16. A lot goes into an application (so make sure you check those rules), and writing a strong research proposal is essential to a successful application.
For the most accurate and up to date information on application requirements and the changes this year, refer to the GSPA website for detailed information.
Take this workshop to learn what goes into an effective proposal, get tips on expressing your complex research clearly, concisely, and persuasively, and practice effective strategies for revising. While this workshop will focus on NSERC guidelines, those applying to CIHR & SSHRC may still find it useful to attend. At the end of the workshop, you’ll have a chance to brainstorm, outline, draft or revise, depending on the stage you’re at for your proposal.
Though examples used and discussion directions may be focused on those with a focus on aging-related research, this workshop is open to all graduate students regardless of affiliation with the Network for Aging Research.

The University of Waterloo acknowledges that much of our work takes place on the traditional territory of the Neutral, Anishinaabeg, and Haudenosaunee peoples. Our main campus is situated on the Haldimand Tract, the land granted to the Six Nations that includes six miles on each side of the Grand River. Our active work toward reconciliation takes place across our campuses through research, learning, teaching, and community building, and is co-ordinated within the Office of Indigenous Relations.
