MONROE, La. (KNOE) – A student at Wossman High School has been awarded the Gates Millennium Scholarship and plans to further her education at the University of Louisiana at Monroe.
Each year only a thousand students in the nation are selected for the Gates Millenium Scholarship and Ambria Jefferson, a graduating senior at Wossman High School, was one in a thousand. She said she learned about the scholarship from her mother after battling health challenges for three years.
Due to her sickness with diabetes, she had to complete her studies online for three years and finished her senior year at Wossman. Ambria overcame those challenges and decided to apply for the Gates Millenium Scholarship.
She said said when she was awarded the scholarship she was amazed. Ambria said she gave a special thanks to her family for motivating her and supporting her in her journey.
Ambria Jefferson, a graduating senior at Wossaman High School said, ” Due to my absence at Wossman, I wasn’t able to participate in a lot of things. So while I did apply and made sure to get help from others and talk to my counselors, when I did sign up it was more wish than something I’d genuinely believed I would get. My family pushed me and said you’re going to get it, don’t say you’re not going to get it. Don’t believe that you’re not going to get it. I’m not an overly expressive person ‚but I was so excited, it’s like it was hard breath and I was just like I did it!”
Ambria plans to major in Pharmacy and become a healthcare professional that helps break systemic barriers faced by African American people, women, and those with health conditions.
