COPA Flight 177 in Exeter, Ont., has awarded its first “Wrench the Dream” grants to help young apprentices working toward their aircraft maintenance engineer (AME) licences.
The two grants were handed out at an Aug. 12, 2025, meeting at Sexsmith Airfield, a grass strip in rural Huron County, about 20 kilometres inland from Lake Huron.
Joy Kuai fro Team Aviation at Stratford Airport will use her grant to buy essential tools and study materials, COPA reported. Shane Jacobs from London International Airport (CYXU) has a special interest in vintage wood-and-fabric aircraft maintenance.
Both Kuai and Jacobs are graduates of the aircraft maintenance technician program at Fanshawe College in London, with plans to write their final licensing exams next year, per COPA.
The Sexsmith Pilots Association, which owns and operates Sexsmith Airfield, supplemented the launch of “Wrench the Dream.” COPA Chapter 177 has for the last nine years also awarded “Flying the Dream” scholarships to aspiring pilots, in partnership with the Jeremy Mason Memorial Fund.
