Washburn Student Government Association opens the Gustavson Scholarship every year to the campus. The Gustavson scholarship, due April 1, is named after the honor of a previous employee of Washburn who made a considerable impact at WU.
“Students who exhibit the qualities of academic achievement and service to the community are the students who receive this award,” said Bella Wood, vice president of WSGA.
Washburn students have been notified about the scholarship through emails. At least three awards are given out every academic year of at least $500 for the fall semester but the range can vary depending on budgetary allowances.
“You have to be really sure you stand out and especially if you are not already in the WSGA,” said Trevor Ottman, chief of staff of WSGA.
All the Washburn University students are eligible for the award. Applicants need to be currently enrolled in six credit hours and six credit hours for the upcoming fall semester with at least a 3.0 cumulative GPA. The scholarship heavily focuses on students serving students, following Washburn’s Latin based motto, “not for ourselves alone.”
“I think that making sure that you make sure that your accomplishments are highlighted, making sure that people know a little bit about what you’ve done, and also just your standing as a student, that’s going to go a long way.” Ottman said.
Ottman received a high range Gustavon scholarship of $800 last semester. He filled the form and answered questions highlighting his service project of bike racks all over the campus.
“There’s so many different areas of campus that you can get involved with in so many different areas of the community that you can really make a difference. And so it’s amazing to get to see all of those come together as students are writing their responses, saying, “this is how Washburn really impacts me,” Wood said.
