
Washington State Universityās Crimson Opportunity Scholarship recently received the largest gift in its history. 
A WSU Insider post announced Thursday that Harold āHalā and Wilma Stellingwerf donated $1.5 million to the scholarship fund. 
Hal earned his degree in mechanical engineering at WSU ā or Washington State College, as it was known back in the day. 
Wilma studied at Central Washington University, or Central Washington State College of Education at that time, to become a teacher and librarian. 
The couple met in Wenatchee, Wash., and married in 1951. They were together until Hal died in 1988. Wilma died in 2019. 
Their final act of generosity was an estate gift to support students at their alma maters. CWUās library had also received a $1.5 million gift from their estate, according to the institutionās Planned Giving webpage. 
The post said the Crimson Opportunity Scholarship, established in 2009, is WSUās most flexible and far-reaching financial support. Itās available to any student regardless of their background, major or campus location.
