MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — West Virginia University will not, as reported by one national outlet, add scholarships for any of its athletes in the 2025-26 academic year, but it will be increasing those totals in several Olympic sports in 2026-27.
WVU Director of Athletics Wren Baker, as reported by BlueGoldNews.com earlier this year, will fully fund the $20.5 million player revenue share allotment for athletes this season, with those monies split among those sports which earn revenue in some ways, such as ticket sales. An eye toward Title IX considerations will also in place.
“We’re at the full rev share, but we have to add scholarships to our Olympic sports so they can compete at the level they need to be at,” Baker said in discussing plans for support dollars next year and beyond. “We did continue to do Alston (at the maximum of $5,980 per full athletic scholarship). As we look at next year, we are focused on adding scholarships. That is something that we are working on now trying to plan for that for next year.”
How many scholarships might be added, and to which sports, is still under study.
“I think we are still early in determining that,” Baker said. “Certainly those will have to be Title IX and gender-equity based in the way you appropriate them. Where we’ll probably start is in visiting with all of our head coaches over the next two or three weeks to see what their needs are.”
Of course, most every coach will lobby for as many scholarships as they have roster spots, but that isn’t going to occur, barring a big revenue influx. Baker will instead try to make the best decisions based on a variety of factors, from the aforementioned Title IX considerations to program needs.
“We’re trying to assemble a big puzzle, but everyone wants a custom piece,” he said with a smile, acknowledging the fact that each coach wants the best for his or her program. “I do want to know what their custom piece may be, even if we aren’t able to satisfy that. But we will try to get a sense for what the needs are for each of our sports teams.”

Shown below are the previous maximum number of scholarships for 2024-25. The new number for 2025-26 and beyond is a roster limit, which cannot be exceeded except in a few instances, but which can all be scholarshipped at the discretion of individual schools. Most schools will not be fully scholarshipping all of their roster spots.
