MADISON (WKOW) — The YMCA of Dane County has provided more than $268,000 in camp scholarships to support local families, according to a press release.
This initiative has allowed 66 kids from 35 families to enjoy summer camps, providing critical child care for working parents.
Mark Westover, YMCA of Dane County president and CEO, said the camps provide multiple opportunities for kids.
“There’s no experience like summer camp at the Y,” Westover said. “Our campers have virtually endless opportunities to explore and discover, and we secretly use fun to challenge and engage them and grow their self-confidence.”
The YMCA partnered with 10 local organizations, including Sun Prairie Community Schools and Madison Metropolitan School District, to identify families most in need of free camp weeks.
“When nonprofits come together, the impact goes far beyond serving more families, it serves families better,” Westover said. “By working collectively, we can address needs more holistically.”
The YMCA’s efforts are fueled by its Annual Campaign, which supports not only camps but also child care, memberships, and other programs. This summer’s scholarships have provided a safe environment, meals, and learning opportunities for kids, alongside the chance to form lifelong friendships.
The YMCA of Dane County invested about $1.3 million in local initiatives last year.
