Yousriya Loza-Sawiris Scholarship for Egyptian Students at the University of Minnesota, USA – Al-Fanar Media

The Yousriya Loza-Sawiris Scholarship offers a transformative opportunity for Egyptian students to pursue a Master’s degree in Development Practice (MDP) at the Hubert H. Humphrey School of Public Affairs, University of Minnesota, USA. Funded by the Sawiris Foundation for Social Development, this prestigious award is designed to equip outstanding Egyptian scholars with the knowledge and practical tools required to drive sustainable development and social impact in Egypt.
The scholarship provides full tuition coverage and living expenses for the first year of the two-year MDP programme, and partial financial support for the second year. In addition, it includes health insurance and travel expenses. Applicants must demonstrate the ability to finance any remaining study costs.
The MDP programme is an interdisciplinary degree that prepares future development leaders to address global challenges such as poverty, climate change, human rights, and health inequalities. The curriculum combines academic coursework with practical field experience, including a ten-week international summer placement, and requires students to complete 50 credits over two years of full-time study.
To qualify, candidates must be Egyptian nationals residing in Egypt, holding a four-year bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) from a recognised institution, and meet the Humphrey School’s English language and admission requirements. A minimum of two years’ relevant work experience in the development sector is also required. Applicants should demonstrate excellent academic performance, leadership potential, and interpersonal skills through extracurricular or community involvement. A strong foundation in liberal arts, combined with quantitative and analytical skills — particularly in mathematics, statistics, and economics — is recommended for success in the programme.
Award recipients are required to return to Egypt upon graduation and commit to working in the country’s development sector for a minimum of two consecutive years, contributing to the nation’s social and economic advancement.
The Sawiris Foundation for Social Development, a leading philanthropic organisation in Egypt, is committed to promoting education and professional development by providing exceptional learning and training opportunities for Egyptian youth both locally and internationally. Through initiatives such as the Yousriya Loza-Sawiris Scholarship, the Foundation continues to empower talented individuals to become agents of change in their communities.
The application deadline for the scholarship is 25 October 2025, while the University of Minnesota’s MDP programme deadline is 15 December 2025. Applicants must submit two separate applications: one to the Sawiris Foundation for the scholarship, and one to the Humphrey School for programme admission.
