OLEAN — The Zonta Club of Olean awarded three scholarships to area residents — Alex Payne, Ciara Ledford and Lindsey Vossler each received scholarships in their pursuit of higher education.
Payne received the Nontraditional Student Scholarship in the amount of $1,000. She is a mother of four attending St. Bonaventure University. The Nontraditional Student Scholarship is for students who did not receive a high school diploma but instead got a GED or those who did not go to college directly after graduating from high school.
Ledford received the Young Women in Public Affairs Scholarship. This $1,500 scholarship is awarded to young women who participate in public affairs by recognizing a commitment to the volunteer sector, evidence of volunteer leadership achievements, and a dedication to empowering women worldwide through service and advocacy.
Ledford is an Allegany-Limestone senior who is heading to Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio to study nutrition.
Vossler was awarded the Continuing Education Scholarship in the amount of $1,000 so that she may pursue studies in nursing at Jamestown Community College. Vossler is a licensed massage therapist.
The Zonta Club of Olean awards scholarships each year. To apply, students may be seniors in high school ready to attend college or adults looking to return to school to continue or start their educations. Applicants are expected to submit a resume and complete an application which includes writing a short essay.
“Zonta is dedicated to helping women help other women,” said Ashlie DeArmitt, Zonta member and chair of the scholarship committee. “Each year we review a number of applications for the scholarship awards and are continually awed by the young women in our community. Alex, Ciara and Lindsey are excellent students and are more than deserving of these awards.”
