CARLSBAD, CA — Ten Carlsbad students were awarded Rising Star of the Year scholarships, the Carlsbad Chamber of Commerce announced.
Throughout the school year, the Carlsbad Chamber of Commerce honored more than 35 high school seniors from six different high schools through the Rising Star of the Month program. The program recognizes students for demonstrating character, integrity, love of learning, involvement in school and community activities and/or the ability to overcome challenging life circumstances without compromising their education.
The honorees were eligible to apply for $1,500 Rising Star of the Year scholarships.
“We are very excited to honor these 10 students,” Bret Schanzenbach, president and CEO of Carlsbad Chamber of Commerce, told Patch. “They have overcome significant obstacles and kept their education on track. We are especially excited to see so many first-generation college-bound students.”
The scholarship winners include four students from Carlsbad High School, four students from Sage Creek High School, a student from Carlsbad Seaside Academy, and a student from La Costa Canyon High School.
The students will be honored during the Rising Stars of the Year Scholarship Breakfast at 8 a.m. May 21 at the Holiday Inn Carlsbad. The event is open to the public. Tickets cost $35.
“This is going to be a great celebratory breakfast,” Schanzenbach said.
