CHERRY HILL, NJ — Two Cherry Hill students have earned a prestigious academic honor, winning National Merit Scholarships.
Gia N. Gupta and Sophia Y. Liu — both Cherry Hill High School East students — were selected as $2,500 scholarship winners. They were among 2,500 students around the nation who received the designation this year.
Liu plans to pursue a career in computer science, while Gupta is undecided, according to the National Merit Scholarship Corporation, which announced the winners Wednesday.
Kids become eligible based on their PSAT scores, then submit an essay, recommendations, grades, and other materials to make the final rounds of consideration.
The National Merit Scholarship Corporation will also announce college-sponsored Merit Scholarship awards on June 5 and July 15. By the end of this year’s competition, about 6,870 students will have won National Merit Scholarships worth a combined $26 million.
