The Martin Luther King Jr. Scholarship Fund awarded $300,000 in scholarships to J.P. McCaskey High School seniors on Friday night during an event at Trinity Lutheran Church, South Duke Street, Lancaster.
The nonprofit fund, established over 40 years ago, is overseen by a board of local teachers, professionals and businesspeople who donate and raise funds, awarded to students for tuition after a process that includes academic and extracurricular review, interviews and an essay. The theme of the essay was “What are you doing for Others and on how they can make a difference in society?”

$20,000, MLK Jr. Memorial Board Scholarship in loving memory of Nelson Polite Sr., former board member (distributed over 4 years): Miazha Smith
$12,500, Botstiber Scholarship (distributed over 4 years): Erik Peachey and Emma Seifert
$10,000, Botstiber Scholarship in memory of and as a tribute to Father Alexander Veronis’ life of service: Jared Groff
$10,000, Nicholas and Susan Veronis Scholarship: May Shee Hta Po and Leilani Cabrol
$10,000, Schoenberger Endowed Scholarship ($1,250 per semester over 4 years) plus $5,000 in first year: Xhanaliese Wesley
$6,000, June Heller Scholarship given in honor of all past MLK Jr. Memorial Scholarship recipients: Leila Joanis
$5,000, Nursing Scholarship in Loving Memory of Joan Pollock, former board member/chair, and $1,000 David Walborn Scholarship in memory of his mother, Evelyn Loretta Walborn, for a combined $6,000: Maria Rojas Vargas
$5,000, Scholarship in loving memory of Geoffrey Herr, presented by Holy Trinity Lutheran Church and the MLK Jr. Scholarship Board, for his dedication and assistance to both: Sayed Ferdows Sadat
