ZANESVILLE, Ohio – The 31st annual Martin Luther King Jr. Scholarship Fund Prayer Breakfast was held this morning at North Terrace Church of Christ.
Scholarship Fund Committee Member Carlotta Workman explained how the event recognizes the academic achievements of area minority students while honoring the legacy of the late Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
“We award $1,000 dollar scholarships to our students and that may not seem like a lot but it is in recognition of their academic achievement. And the scholarship can be used towards books, supplies for college. And it’s a motivator because we are encouraging, we are helping students to be the best they can be but we are also recognizing him as a great civil rights leader, who fought for all of our equal rights,” Workman said.
Scholarship applicants must have earned a 3.0 minimum GPA, an 18 or higher ACT score and already applied to a 2-or-4 year college to be eligible for the award. This year 17 local seniors from 5 Muskingum County High Schools received the $1,000 dollar award.
“It was a pretty easy process,” Michael Hill, Zanesville High School Senior and Scholarship recipient said. “Our Counselor, Ms. Hina, at the high school, told us about it. We went on the website in the Google classroom and it was a pretty easy process. Just had to fill out some information. Make sure you were qualified to do it. And I mean as far as getting it, I wasn’t really expecting to… I guess get an answer so soon. I got an email one day randomly while I was just sitting in my room and I was pretty excited. I went and told my parents and everything and we’re really happy about it.”
The Starlight School of the Muskingum County Board of Developmental Disabilities was honored as this year’s special organization due to their commitment in practicing Dr. King’s dream of helping everyone reach their fullest potential.
