PORTAGE, MI — Forty-five high school seniors are being recognized for excellence in education by the Kalamazoo Regional Education Service Agency (KRESA).
The seniors were selected through KRESA’s Excellence in Education Program. Every year, a team of representatives from local school districts, KRESA and the Kalamazoo Community Foundation selects students to receive the honor.
Students must have a 3.7 GPA for the first seven semesters of their high school career to qualify. Each school selects the top 2% of their highest performing seniors.
The winners will receive a $1,200 scholarship. They’ll also choose a teacher who had an impact on their educational career to be recognized as well. The program is funded through a permanent endowment at the Kalamazoo Community Foundation.
The total number of awardees is determined by the fall enrollment count. This year, that resulted in 44 spots for students to receive the award. But at one school, there was a GPA tie between twins. One of the twins will receive a scholarship of the same amount, privately funded by the district, said Amy Manchester, executive assistant to the superintendent at Vicksburg Public School.
An award ceremony will be held for the students on Wednesday, April 10 at the Fetzer Center, 2251 Business Court.
