EFFINGHAM COUNTY, Ga. (WTOC) – Five middle school students in Effingham County are already on track to graduate high school with a $10,000 scholarship waiting for them.
The 8th graders were selected for the REACH Georgia scholarship at the beginning of the school year based on their academic performance, attendance and behavior.
Each recipient must maintain a 2.5 GPA, stay alcohol and drug-free, and be paired with mentors throughout high school. Once the students complete the program, they will receive their $10,000 scholarship to use at HOPE-eligible institutions.
Grace Mouhon, an 8th-grader at Effingham County Middle School, says she’s excited to be a REACH Georgia scholar and have support for her future.
“I had a plan that I was going to work hard to earn the money, but now thanks to the scholarship, I won’t have to work too much as hard. I’ll still have to work hard, but not as hard. So, it means a lot to win this scholarship and make everyone and my parents proud,” said Mouhon.
Armon’e Burt and Kellen Langford from Ebenezer Middle School, as well as Joel Barrerra and Ryder English from South Effingham Middle School, signed their REACH Georgia scholarship contracts Tuesday alongside Mouhon.
School Superintendent Dr. Yancy Ford says the district is proud of these students for their hard work and that they have plenty of potential to accomplish great things.
