TOLEDO, Ohio — Only a few days are left before the deadline to apply for the Ability Center‘s Scholarship Program for students with disabilities.
Interested applicants have until Sunday, March 2 to apply for the scholarship. The center launched this year’s program in early February, inviting all students who qualify to apply for the funds. Qualifications for eligibility are as follows:
Students can earn up to $5,000 in scholarship funds which must be used for academic or career purposes in some way. This can include tuition for higher education, vocational training, certification programs, or use of things not covered by state funding or insurance.
The point of this scholarship, Ability Center‘s Director of Independent Living Maggie Dreier said, is to empower students to pursue their academic and career goals.
“We encourage people to dream big. We want that,” Dreier said. “We’re so excited to be able to award our recipients at our Together We Move event on June 1. That’s where they’ll be receiving this [scholarship] and that is a big community event. To bring the community together to really be focused on disability empowerment.”
Application for the funds includes two essay questions and letters of recommendation. Dreier said applicants are encouraged to follow the rules, but also be creative if they feel inclined to do so. She added, while not everyone will be be chosen to receive funds, everyone should apply.
“I would encourage everyone to apply and I mean if they don’t get picked, there’s always next year, too. So we have a lot of great applicants that apply each year, and we try to choose the best. We wish we could give it out to everyone, but there’s always next year too,” Dreier said.
