Air Canada has made a significant stride towards promoting diversity and inclusivity in the aviation industry by announcing a new scholarship program aimed at supporting students from underrepresented backgrounds pursuing studies as Aircraft Maintenance Engineers (AMEs).
This initiative will assist in fostering access and opportunity in a profession historically dominated by certain demographics.
Under the newly forged agreement, Air Canada has partnered with seven colleges across Canada to extend financial aid to students who identify as women or visible minorities and are enrolled in AME programs.
Each selected student will receive a generous $1,500 scholarship, providing invaluable assistance in covering educational expenses.
Moreover, these recipients will have the unique opportunity to embark on work placements at Air Canada Maintenance, gaining invaluable hands-on experience in their field.
Joshua Vanderveen, Vice President of Maintenance at Air Canada, expressed the airline’s dedication to nurturing the next generation of AMEs through collaborative endeavors with academic institutions nationwide.
Vanderveen emphasized the multifaceted skill set demanded by contemporary AMEs, highlighting the pivotal role they play in ensuring the safety and efficiency of commercial aircraft operations.

The scholarships will be awarded to students enrolled in AME programs at prominent institutions including the British Columbia Institute of Technology (BCIT), École Nationale d’Aérotechnique, Centennial College, Fanshawe College, Canadore College, Mohawk College, and Northern Lights College.
This strategic partnership not only bolsters Air Canada’s outreach efforts but also strengthens ties with recognized educational facilities committed to quality aviation education.
As Air Canada continues to spearhead initiatives aimed at fostering talent development and inclusivity, a recent accolade stands as further testament to this focus. Last year, the carrier received two accolades as part of the Employment Equity Achievement Awards.
Last month, Air Canada was recognized as one of the top employers for young people in Canada in 2024, the first time the airline has received this recognition.
This honour, awarded by Mediacorp Canada Inc., celebrates the nation’s leading organizations for their commitment to developing and nurturing young professionals.
