Advocates for Charles McNeair is pleased to announce the establishment of the Charles Anthony McNeair Scholarship for Educational Advancement, a new initiative designed to link positive character to education and empower minority high school students who demonstrate academic promise. This scholarship honors the legacy of Charles McNeair, whose young life was tragically redirected by racism and illiteracy. McNeair’s story of 45 years of incarceration from age 16 to the present, has sparked his desire to see the transformative power of education in the lives of marginalized youth.
In recognition of the role that illiteracy played in his conviction, namely his inability to advocate for himself confidently, this scholarship aims to break down barriers to higher education and provide opportunities for students who may face hardships and academic challenges.
Discovering that knowledge is power motivated McNeair to begin to embrace the learning opportunities that were available to him in prison. While incarcerated, McNeair has obtained his GED and some received some college certifications. He wants to ensure that every student, regardless of background, has the resources and opportunities to succeed.
The Scholarship is more than just financial support; It is a concrete reminder that education can be a pathway to justice, competence and opportunity. The Advocates for Charles McNeair are committed to making a difference in McNeair’s life as he awaits release and in the lives of students who have the drive and determination to succeed regardless of the challenges they confront.
