Runners, joggers and serious strollers are invited to bring their enthusiasm and endurance to the annual Race to the Flagpole event at Independence Park in Livermore on Jan. 25.
Hosted by the Livermore Granada Booster Club, the race, which features 1 mile, 5K and 10K events, is the group’s biggest fundraiser. Proceeds go towards the Livermore Granada Booster Club’s Olympian Scholarship program, which will provide $16,000 in college scholarships this year for student athletes.
The race is the booster club’s primary fundraiser during the year.
“I think the great thing about this is it is a community event where we get students and families from all the schools coming out to support each other,” said Vern Chase, co-president of the Livermore Granada Boosters and track coach at Livermore High School. “It’s a nice run through a beautiful park; it’s a great event.”
The popular community event draws more than 500 participants each year, said Chase, and while the run is not specifically to the flagpole as the name implies, there is a flagpole at Independence Park where the National Anthem will be sung to kick off the event and a color guard will raise an American flag.
The Livermore Granada Boosters have a long history in the Tri-Valley. Since 1949, the nonprofit organization has worked to enhance sports programs in the Livermore Valley Joint Unified School District and to encourage student-athletes. In the beginning, the boosters served just Livermore High School, but as the district and city grew, the group expanded to include Granada High School.
Registration for the event begins at 7 a.m., with the first race starting at 8:45 a.m. All participants receive a commemorative T-shirt, medal and post-race refreshments. The top male and female finishers will also be recognized for the 5k, 10k, and 1-mile runs. The top elementary, middle, and high school with the most participants will be recognized, and the fastest elementary, middle, and high school will be honored as well.
“Livermore is a small community and especially if you are involved in the schools, you really get a sense of the closeness of the community,” Chase said. “The whole thing is a lot of fun with lots of school spirit.”
Volunteers are always welcome as are donations, Chase added. For registration, volunteer or donation information, visit https://bit.ly/4jcn2AJ
