Applications are now being accepted for the Gailes Scholarship, which is open to any current high school seniors who attended Quioccasin Middle School for a minimum of two years. Recipient(s) are awarded up to $10,000 toward college or accredited post-secondary education.
Recipients are chosen on the basis of leadership skills, high moral character, and involvement in the school and community. The scholarship is not based upon financial need or academic distinction, such as GPA. The $10,000 may be allotted to one student or divided between several.
The application must be completed and submitted by April 8.
The Gailes Scholarship honors Dr. Lonnie E. Gailes, who served as the first principal of the school (formerly known as Byrd Middle School) and retired in 1984 after a 33-year career. The school’s PTA established the scholarship to award those who embody the character and leadership that Gailes cultivated and admired most about his middle school students.
The scholarship committee encourages applicants to use the online Word Document to complete the application, but a PDF version is available upon request.
The scholarship recipient’s school counselor and the guardian listed on the application will be notified by May 2, and the applicant will receive the news as a “surprise” during their high school awards assembly. The recipient also should plan to attend Quioccasin Middle School’s eighth-grade “Moving Up Ceremony” to receive the award and check in person on May 29 from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Tucker High School.
For details, email Ashley Gulick (Quioccasin PTSO Chair) at gailesscholarship@quioccasinptso.org.
