The Community Foundation for Palm Beach and Martin Counties has kicked off its annual scholarship program, offering local high school students a chance to pursue higher education without financial burden.
Julie Lauderbaugh from the foundation said, "The Community Foundation is really the connective tissue between donors who want to give where they live and the constellation of nonprofits who depend on that support."
Celebrating its 40th year, the scholarship program has already helped about 3,000 students achieve their educational dreams. "We're really excited because we feel like this is such a big impact on the economic mobility of students," Lauderbaugh said.
Giselle Galvan, a scholarship recipient and student at Florida Atlantic University, shared how the scholarship changed her life. "I come from a low-income household, so college was always the goal but I never really knew how to have financial support," she said. "When I was awarded a scholarship, my life changed. I was able to attend college these past three years debt-free."

Galvan, who switched her major from architecture to interdisciplinary studies with a concentration in visual and community design, said, "I want to focus on art and how art impacts people because art is in everything."
For students interested in applying, Lauderbaugh said, "We do have a series of info sessions for any student who would like to apply. You can go to our website: yourcommunityfoundation.org. The applications close on February 3 at 5 p.m."

Galvan encouraged students facing financial hardships to believe in their potential. "College is attainable and you have more power than you know in your story," she said. "You can create that impact in your life and the people in your life."
