BANGOR, Maine (WABI) – Owners of a Bangor-based consignment store aren’t kidding with the name ‘The Not So Empty Nest.’
Winter can mean more time spent indoors.
The Not So Empty Nest’s newest addition is hoping to cure any cabin fever with crafting.
After taking over the business with her mom almost two years ago, co-owner Monica Conary says she knew she wanted to repurpose the backroom somehow: “I felt like the space wasn’t getting used enough, so my mom and I decided to give it a little makeover and do a craft space where people can just come in whenever they wanted to.”
The self-serve space provides a great opportunity for parties, small groups or solo crafters.
Currently, guests can paint plant pots and assemble and decorate wood kits, with picks fitting for artists of all ages.
“We’re always thinking of ways to, like bring the community in and have a space where they can have fun, like our plant bar and now this,” describes Conary of the desire to add the Workshop space.
While you’re at The Not So Empty Nest, you can pick up one of the many crochet plushies that helps send local high schoolers to college.
That’s what Annette McCoy has been doing with her business Comfy Cozy Creations.
These bunnies and other animals are crocheted by McCoy, with all proceeds benefitting The Evan McCoy Memorial Scholarship Fund.
In memory of McCoy’s son, she awards these profits to a graduating senior at Hermon High School.
Conary says customers love McCoy’s bunnies, and as a local business, she’s proud to partner with an independent crafter crocheting to better the community: “I did not get the chance to meet Evan, but I have spoken to Annette. She’s been a part of my life now for a couple years, and she’s just wonderful. Her work inspires me.”
You can find McCoy’s crochet creations at The Not So Empty Nest on outer Broadway in Bangor.
