Barrow County students have the opportunity to apply for 18 scholarships through the Barrow Community Foundation, with awards ranging from $1,000 to $2,500.
The Barrow Community Foundation is awarding 18 scholarships ranging from $1,000 to $2,500 each to college-bound students from Barrow County’s public schools. The scholarships, open to all majors and institutions, are both need- and merit-based.
The foundation has awarded thousands of dollars in scholarships over the years, thanks to generous community support.
Applications are currently being accepted for the following scholarships through BCF. The deadline to apply is March 7.
Apalachee Scholars Award – Following the tragic incident at Apalachee High School on Sept. 4, 2024, an anonymous donor has established the Apalachee Scholars Award. This initiative will grant $1,000 scholarships to 10 students from Apalachee High School’s classes of 2025 through 2029. Applicants must be accepted to an accredited college, university or technical program. A one-page essay describing how the applicant has overcome adversity is required. The essay may, but does not have to, relate to the school tragedy.
Shelia Hawthorne Scholarship – Established in 2020, this scholarship is awarded annually to one or more graduating seniors from Barrow County public high schools. It is intended for students pursuing a technical or four-year degree in healthcare or biological sciences. Community service is a key component of the award. Howard and Shelia Hawthorne, longtime contributors to the Barrow community, have supported education and service initiatives throughout their lives.
Raymond H. Reynolds, Sr. Scholarship – Created in 2024, this scholarship honors longtime Winder-Barrow High School teacher and coach Raymond H. Reynolds, Sr., who was inducted into the WBHS Athletics Hall of Fame in 2009. Each year, one or two graduating student-athletes who demonstrate grit, perseverance and commitment to their team will receive a $2,500 renewable scholarship. The award can be renewed for up to five years, provided the student remains athletically and academically eligible. Applicants must be nominated by the school’s athletic director.
Glenn Segars Scholarship- First awarded in 1999, this scholarship honors Glenn Segars, a pioneer in Georgia’s Future Farmers of America and a former assistant commissioner of agriculture. The award is given to one or more students who have demonstrated academic success, community involvement and financial need.
Slaughter Educational Scholarship – Originally established in 1967, this scholarship is awarded annually to one or more Barrow County graduates who plan to pursue a degree in education at an accredited college or university.
Ellen Traylor Terrell Scholarship – Created in 2023 in memory of Ellen Traylor Terrell, this scholarship is designated for students pursuing a degree in healthcare, business or another major at a technical or four-year college. A member of the Terrell family will participate in the selection process.
