Raymon Owen, Lucy Hoppe, Gracie Shane, and Luca Capitani were awarded the ninth annual Rosemary Nebesky Memorial scholarships by the Carson City Symphony Association at the Holiday Treat concert Dec. 15.
The scholarship was established by John and Jennifer Webley of Santa Rosa, Calif., in memory of Rosemary Nebesky, who loved music, children, and had been a friend and board member of the Carson City Symphony Association.
It is awarded each year to one or more Carson City students aged 5-17 to further their instrumental music education. The recent winners are passionate about music and were highly recommended by their teachers.
Owen is a junior at Carson High School. He has played bass for six years, starting in sixth grade. He also plays percussion in the Blue Thunder Marching Band and improvises on cello. He participates in honor orchestra, solo and ensemble festival, and a student jazz combo. He plans to use his scholarship for the Winter Drumline program, Honor Band, All-State Orchestra, and private lessons on bass.
Hoppe is an eighth grader at Carson Middle School. She has played violin for four years and has auditioned for Honor Orchestra and All-State Orchestra. She admires the high energy, choreographed, performances of violinist Lindsey Stirling. Hoppe will use her scholarship to participate in Carson City School Orchestras’ spring trip to the Bay Area.
Shane is an eighth grader at Eagle Valley Middle School. She has played violin for seven years. She has participated in the NZNMEA Festival and the Carson City School Orchestras’ spring trip, was a section leader in Honor Orchestra as a sixth grader and has won a superior rating in the Solo and Ensemble Festival. She will use her scholarship to continue private violin lessons.
Capitani is a sixth grader at Eagle Valley Middle School. He began playing trumpet in 2023 and cello in 2024. His orchestra director, Brian Fox, said he has the right combination of talent, dedication, and curiosity to excel and has grown musically by leaps and bounds. He will use his scholarship for private cello lessons.
The Webley-Nebesky family made a further contribution to the scholarship fund at the end of 2023 to continue the awards for years to come. The next round of scholarships will be awarded in the fall.
