CARTHAGE — To remember a long-time coach and raise funds for her memorial scholarship, the second annual Randi Brotherton Memorial Alumni Basketball Games were held Dec. 21.
Mrs. Brotherton, who was the Carthage Central High School varsity girls coach for 17 seasons and a teacher at Carthage for 31 years, died Feb. 3 at age 54 after a battle with cancer.
The woman’s game started off the action with very competitive action resulting in the Gray team coached by Tammi Anderson winning in overtime 36-30. The game went into two minutes of extra time with a score of 30-30, As the clock ticked down, Amy Ternan Harley, Class of 2011, sank a three-pointer. With the Gray regaining position, Brooklynne Perrigo, class of 2022, threw a buzzer beater from outside the paint to cinch the win.
Ms. Anderson said the game was a nice way to honor her friend, Mrs. Brotherton.
This was the second time her team won the tourney.
“It was great to have all the girls here to honor Randi’s memory said Liza Grover, the Red team was coach.
Rounding out the home Gray team were Leanne Wood, Class of 2004; Theresa Staab Escudaro, 2007; Kendra Clemons, 2014; Rachael Nevills, 2019; Petty Vanlue, 2020 and Gracie Teiser, 2023.
On the Red team were Amy Wood Dicob, 1998; Lisa Weller, 2000; Joelle Percy Paquin, 2010; Hannah Millich, 2014; Kendra Lawton, 2017; Hannah Makuch, 2023 and Bella Perrigo, 2024.
Between games, alumni who had achieved 1,000 career points were recognized. Those achieving this milestone were Kelly Roche, who played 1987-1989 garnering 1,097 points; Mark Metcalf, 1989-1992, 1,298 points; Amy Wood, 1993-1998, 1,195 points; Pat Britton, 1993-1996, 1,433 points; Lisa Weller, 1995-2000, 1,135 points; Caitlyn Nabewaniec, 2002-2004, 1,019 points; Sherman Nelson, 2005-2009, 1,069 points; Sarah Johnson, 2006-2010, 1,284 points; Peyton McLaurin 2012-2015, 1,163 points; and Trenton Walker, 2020-2023, 1,097 points.
The event concluded with the men’s game which the Red team, coached by Jordan Trowbridge, “won easily” according to the Gray coach Nick Piroli, Class of 2019. The final score was 63-50. This was the first year the men played in the tourney.
On the Red team were hunter Craig, Class of 2011; Pat Britton, 1996; Elijah Whitfield, 2020; Ashton Norton, 2023; Grant Dicob, 2024; Kalel Tevago, 2024; Jeff Ventiquattro, 1994 and Andrew Smith, 2014, On the Gray team were Makiah Johnson, 2024; Brian Johnson, 2024; Eric Hofmann, 2024; Mike Haberman, 2005; Mike Nevills, 2016 and Zion Tevago, 2020.
Event organizer Amy Harley said this year’s event raised $1,600 from donations, 50/50 baskets, and T-shirt sales.
The Carthage varsity basketball coaches, Jeff Ventiquattro and Amy Dicob along with James Brotherton, the husband of the scholarship’s namesake, select a senior from the two programs to receive the scholarship. Recipients of the inaugural scholarship were Bella Perigo and Grant Dicob.
