(ST. JOSEPH, Mo.) Cotillion for Achievement is forming young leaders in the community by giving them the skills necessary for the professional world.
On Monday, participants were taught how to have proper etiquette in a professional environment.
Zamuel Brushwood, a senior at East Buchanan, said what the class was learning so far.
“The first thing we learned was how to seat yourself, how to present yourself, how to do a proper handshake, and other verbal communications so you look presentable and you look professional,” Brushwood said.
After watching videos and listening to their speakers about proper etiquette, the participants applied what they learned through a dining experience.
“In the whole job world, you find yourself needing to have that professional aspect and so being able to know right now is really nice because later whenever you’re going to do interviews for college or for other scholarships or thinks like that, you’re somebody who’s not just somebody in the crowd,” Brushwood said. “You stand out in a proper way in your etiquette, and it shows you’re more professional than others.”
Participants can use what they learned at the cotillion session for success in future leadership roles.
Gracie Wilmes, a senior at North Andrew, hoped to take away lessons which could help in pursuing a career in radiology.
“Doctor to patient confidentiality, just how you treat someone, how you talk to someone, all in how you present yourself, and not only present yourself, but how you talk to someone else and have an interaction with them I feel is very important,” Wilmes said.
These participants will be obtaining scholarships from having been involved in these classes.
In two weeks, the participants will do interviews with a panel of judges from the community for the chance to receive additional scholarships at the formal ball on Feb. 22.
