The Custer County Foundation (CCF) held its annual Scholarship Award Ceremony on Sunday at the One Box Convention Center in Broken Bow. Board Member Logan Govier announced that 97 scholarships for a total of $165,440 were awarded during the ceremony.
In front of an attendance eclipsing 300, Rilee Daffer, Executive Director of the Custer County Foundation, introduced guest speaker Kyle Smith. Smith grew up in Broken Bow and graduated from Broken Bow High School before attending Hastings College where he obtained a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration and Sports Management. Kyle currently works for Hastings College as the Director of Major Gifts.
During his speech, Smith encouraged the students to adapt his experiences to their stories, journeys, and destinations, ‘the only one that really matters’.
Available for four-year and two-year degrees, over 1,200 applications were received for this years scholarships which are for various fields of study including nursing, veterinary medicine, journalism, lineman, and cosmetology to name a few. The selection process was repeatedly stated to not be an easy task. Anticipation was high as students found out for the first time during the ceremony what scholarship they are receiving and its amount.
Guests and donors were thanked for traveling from near and far to attend and present scholarships and share great stories about their families as well as offer words of advice and encouragement.
Since its inception 33 years ago, the CCF has awarded over $1.6 million in scholarships to Custer County students. Those wishing to learn more about establishing a scholarship through the CCF are invited to contact the office at 308-872-2232 or email [email protected].
