A trio of NWT women have been awarded special scholarships to help them advance in their chosen STEM educations.
These scholarships from the De Beers group are intended to help financially support women as they pursue careers in fields relating to Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM). Each of these scholarships are worth $4,500 each.
The three recipients are Aubey Slugget from Yellowknife, Symone Berube from Fort Smith, and Madison Menacho-Melnyk from Norman Wells.
Aubrey is in her first year of Honours Health Science at the University of Waterloo. She hopes to one day become a doctor who specializes in women’s health and return to the NWT to serve her community.
Madison is attending Yukon University, where she studies Environment and Conservational Sciences. She is the first person in her family to study at a post-secondary institution, and hopes to pass on the knowledge she learns to younger generations.
Symone is attending York University to study Neuroscience, and is hoping to narrow her study down to Behavioural and Cognitive Neuroscience. Symone hopes to experience many other learning opportunities with the help of this scholarship.
De Beers first launched their STEM scholarship program in 2018, and since then 107 scholarships have been given to Canadian women. De Beers works in collaboration with UN Women, the University of Waterloo, the University of Calgary, and Scholarships Canada.
