Twelve members of the Wall Street Scholars of Nebraska — a student organization in the University of Nebraska-Lincoln’s College of Business — traveled to New York City prior to the spring semester to network with industry leaders from 13 of the world’s most respected investment banks and asset management firms. The opportunity was made possible by Matt and Natasha Plooster of Bridgepoint Investment Banking.
HASTINGS — A pair of Central Community College-Hastings heavy equipment operator technology students from Wood River have been named recipients of the Jim R. DeBord Scholarship.
Ron and Tammy DeBord established the scholarship in honor of Ron’s father, Jim, who worked in the heavy equipment field for more than three decades.
Nathanial Krolikowski and Braden Wynn each received a $1,000 scholarship to assist them in their educational pursuits. Both Krolikowski and Wynn said the funds will help with commuting expenses as they both still live in Wood River.
“I was really shocked by receiving the scholarship,” said Krolikowski, who wants to work for a firm and progress through the ranks. “I wasn’t expecting it, but it’s just a great opportunity.”
“I think it’s a great opportunity (the DeBords) for all the kids out here,” said Wynn, who works at Green Plains in Wood River.
This is the fifth year that the DeBord Scholarship has been presented to two students in the HEOT program.
Three Central Community College students have received a $500 TRIO Leaders Award scholarship.
The TRIO/Student Support Services program awards the scholarship annually to TRIO/SSS students who have exhibited superior leadership through extensive involvement and outstanding service in their schools, communities and/or workplaces.
Earning scholarships were: Nicole Groetch of Aurora, a human services major at the Grand Island Campus; Maricarmen Apodaca-Hernandez of Hastings, a radiology technician major at the Hastings Campus; and Josue Fuentes of Schuyler, a music major at the Columbus Campus.
The TRIO/SSS program helps first-generation and low-income students with a demonstrated academic need overcome barriers to their dreams. The program also is open to students with documented physical or learning disabilities.
SEWARD —  Concordia Nebraska’s internationally acclaimed A Cappella Choir will travel to locations in Nebraska and Colorado on their spring 2025 tour from April 2-7.
Area students who are members of the choir include: Jordan Head of Hastings, sophomore, soprano I; Miriam Ganoung of Halsey, junior, alto II; and Sean Duffy of Kenesaw, sophomore, bass II.
The group tours locally, throughout the United States or abroad each year. The choir also regularly performs at school assemblies and participates in Sunday worship services. The choir is under the direction of Dr. Kurt von Kampen, chair of Concordia’s music department and professor of music.
The tour kicks off with a performance at 7 p.m. Wednesday, April 2, at Kearney High School. It then continues with performances in Centennial, Parker, Loveland and Fort Collins, Colorado.
Admission to the concerts is free and freewill offerings will be collected at each concert to assist with tour costs.
Abreham Stutzman of Doniphan was among 12 members of the Wall Street Scholars of Nebraska, a student organization in the University of Nebraska-Lincoln’s College of Business, who recently traveled to New York City to meet and network with investment bankers and investment professionals. Stutzman is a junior majoring in finance and accounting. The experience, dubbed “Bridgepoint U,” allowed the group members to connect with 13 of the finance industry’s most competitive firms and explore job and internship opportunities. The trip was made possible with support from Matt and Natasha Plooster, and Bridgepoint Investment Banking.
Hayden Hauge of Shelton, a senior majoring in broadcasting, journalism, film studies and English at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, was part of a team that won an award in the Broadcast Education98*/- Association’s Festival of Media Arts in February. Hauge was the director on the Nebraska Nightly team that won first place in the television newscast (three days a week or fewer) category. The BEA Festival of Media Arts is an international media competition focused on student and faculty creative endeavors. In the last six years, more than 8,000 creative works have been submitted by BEA’s 300-plus member institutions around the globe. This year, BEA received 2,285 entries and awarded 445 student winners from 111 colleges and universities.
Kaylee Powell of Central City was recently awarded the Virgil Eihusen Scholarship by the NE Chamber Foundation. Powell, a student at Concordia University in Seward, was one of six students at state universities receiving a $2,500 scholarship named for past Nebraska Business Hall of Fame honorees. Students must be sophomores or juniors in a business-related field, show demonstrated leadership in extracurricular activities and maintain at least a 3.0 grade point-average to be considered. Since 1997, the NE Chamber Foundation has awarded more than $267,000 in scholarships to more than 130 students across Nebraska.
Gracie Ackles of Farwell was one of five recipients of a scholarship awarded by the Nebraska Chapter of the Soil & Water Conservation Society, the Nebraska Soil & Water Conservation Foundation and the Nebraska Chapter SWCSUNL Foundation for the spring semester. Each recipient was awarded $1,000. Ackles is a freshman at Chadron State College majoring in Rangeland Management and Agricultural Education, and received the Dave Langemeier Memorial Scholarship.
Derrick Ruzicka, a senior at St. Paul High School, was one of six Nebraska high school students selected to receive a $500 Financial Aid Program Scholarships from EducationQuest Foundation. Recipients were selected from more than 900 students who registered for the scholarship after attending one of EducationQuest’s virtual or in-person Financial Aid Programs this academic year. EducationQuest hosted nearly 4,700 attendees at 105 Financial Aid Programs across the state, which were intended to educate students and parents about the college financial aid application process.
Lydia Ziemba of Silver Creek is one of 13 Nebraska college students earning a scholarship from the EducationQuest Foundation. Ziemba is a student at the Nebraska College of Technical Agriculture in Curtis. The awarded scholarships totaled nearly $85,000. The Reaching Your Potential Scholarship Program provides renewable scholarships to low-income Nebraska students who face obstacles to college. Recipients who attend a two-year college receive $3,300 annually, and those who attend a four-year college receive $6,800 annually. Applicants are referred by community agencies, colleges, and select high schools across the state.
