WHEELING — Two seniors from Wheeling Park High School are the recipients of the Wheeling Elks Scholarships for 2024-25.
Katelyn Smith and Trenton Rosenthal each will receive $1,000 from Wheeling Lodge No. 28, according to Elks Youth Activities Chairman Joe Marchlenski. Both are eligible for further state and national Elks scholarships.
Smith ranks third in her class, and has been captain of the girls soccer team, the girls track and field team, and the speech and debate team. She served as President of the Senate at WV Girls State, and has been named an AP Scholar with Distinction.
She was a state champion in the public forum debate category, and is a writer and researcher for the Youth Law Institute. She plans to attend New York University and major in English.
Rosenthal ranks second in his class, and is a three-time winner of the Stifel Award. He serves as a youth leader and a freshman mentor, and is a three-year member of the baseball team. He also serves as a Regional Environmental Action Program counselor.
He volunteers a significant number of hours at St. Vincent De Paul Parish in a variety of capacities, and also delivers meals for Catholic Charities. He plans to attend West Virginia University and major in chemical engineering.
”We believe it is important to recognize outstanding leadership and scholarship qualities in the youth of our area,” said Elks Exalted Ruler Steve Rodocker. “We are proud that more than $4 million in scholarships is awarded nationally by the Elks each year.”
