FALL RIVER – Students of Portuguese descent from Fall River area schools may now apply for the annual Fall River Chapter of the Prince Henry Society scholarships.
Last year, the Society was able to assist 19 outstanding students by providing about $20,000 in financial assistance.
“The Prince Henry Society is dedicated to being able to offer these scholarships to deserving students, assisting them in furthering their education and achieving their dreams,” Fall River Price Henry Society President David Rocha stressed.
The scholarship is only open to Portuguese descent students graduating from Argosy Charter School, Atlantis Charter School, B.M.C. Durfee H.S., Diman Regional Vocational Technical H.S., Joseph Case H.S., Seekonk H.S., Somerset Berkley Regional H.S., Tiverton H.S., and Westport H.S.
Students who live in Greater Fall River but attend other area schools should contact the New Bedford or Taunton PHS chapters to see if they are eligible for their scholarships.
Application forms are available from guidance counselors and from the Society’s website at www.phsfr.org/scholarship-program.
Deadline to apply is April 1.
The application may be submitted online through the website, but all supporting documents must be mailed by April 24 to: Prince Henry Society of Fall River, P.O. Box 3563, Fall River, MA 02722.
Students need to write a 400-word essay about the influence of their culture. In addition to the essay and the application form, the complete application packet including transcripts, proof of FAFSA EFC as well as copies of tax returns and W-2s, three letters of recommendations and a resume.
Applications are also accepted from guidance counselors, and all are reviewed by a committee of PHS members. In addition to their high school guidance counselor, students can get applications at St. Anthony of Padua Credit Union.
Scholarships are usually awarded each June.
Community members wishing to establish scholarships in their family’s name or in memory of a loved one may do so with a donation of $1,000. The donation would fund a scholarship for one year.
