FDR-Hyde Park senior Jaleena Rodriguez will be the first person in her family to attend college, something she is proud of, and her loved ones and school feel the same about her.
Rodriguez has been named a Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Breakfast Youth Honoree and will receive a $2,000 scholarship it was announced this week. The students who receive the scholarship must demonstrate academic achievements in school and be involved in community service.
FDR Superintendent Dr. Pedro Roman described Rodriguez as a high-achieving student who consistently challenges herself academically, which includes pursuing Advance Placement courses and dual enrollment at Dutchess Community College in the fall. She volunteers at a local soup kitchen, serving others with compassion and empathy, and is the captain of the girls’ basketball team.
“This dedication to helping those in need reflects her strong character and desire to make a positive impact on the world,” Roman said. “She is a truly deserving candidate who exemplifies the values of leadership, service, and academic excellence.”
Rodriguez plans to pursue a career in either psychology or social work, which stems from her desire to make a positive impact on the lives of others. She said she was grateful for the support she has received from staff, friends, and school counselor Rebecca Moore, who helped her achieve her academic goals.
“Every student goes through academic struggles, but having the support and guidance through these struggles will always be significant to me,” she said. “I understand that many deserving candidates were also in consideration, which makes this opportunity even more meaningful to me.”
