As FirstBank continues to support the education of Puerto Rico’s youth through the YOU First College Program, it recently awarded 26 scholarships to students from six universities in Puerto Rico.
Through the program, the financial institution provides funds for studies to help develop high-performance students from low-income families, along with internship programs, entrepreneurship and financial education studies, and varied experiences for personal and professional development.
During the scholarship award event held at the Puerto Rico Convention Center, FirstBank announced that this year, it will award $70,000.00 to continue supporting the island’s university students.

“Through our You First Scholarship Program, we’re not only recognizing the ability of college students to do their best, but also encouraging them and helping them achieve their academic goals and professional dreams. At FirstBank, we not only recognize individual achievements, but also highlight the fundamental importance of education for the island’s economic development, and for each generation,” said Ginoris López-Lay, Executive Vice President of Strategic Management and Development at FirstBank.
Through the YOU First Scholarship Program, the financial institution has established partnerships with Pontificia Universidad Católica de Puerto Rico (PUCPR), Universidad Ana G. Méndez (UAGM), Inter American University of Puerto Rico (with its Metro, Bayamón and San Germán campuses), Universidad Politécnica de Puerto Rico, the University of Puerto Rico (with its Arecibo, Río Piedras and Mayagüez campuses), and Universidad del Sagrado Corazón.

Jayson Ramos, who was a guest speaker at the activity and a young entrepreneur who graduated from the University of Puerto Rico, recounted his success story to the FirstBank scholarship recipients, sending a message that “when we focus on meeting our goals, they can be achieved at any age.”
Currently, Jason is a host for the Mentores en Línea podcast, where he has conversations with founders and leaders from various industries in Puerto Rico.
In addition to scholarships, the YOU First College Program includes annual internships that provide students from various disciplines the opportunity to work at FirstBank, with access to the 1Éxito Universitarios initiative, which offers training on entrepreneurship, finance, leadership and other topics.
Students can also benefit from El Outfit – a free store located at the Business Administration Facility on the University of Puerto Rico’s Río Piedras campus. There, students can acquire corporate attire for their job interviews.
The program also offers the YOU First College Tour, an initiative by which universities are visited to educate about good financial practices through the bank’s products and services, with YOU First Study Spaces located at Inter American University’s San Germán and Bayamón campuses, as well as the Ponce campus of Pontificia Universidad Católica de Puerto Rico, and serve as meeting points for the student community.
