Five Teller County high school seniors won $1,500 scholarships from the nonprofit organization, HtN- Hope Lives Here.
The judges looked at the students’ grade-point average, their scores on the SATs in addition to their community involvement. The final thrust was the essays, and each must be enrolled in either college or a trade school in the fall.
“There is a lot of volunteering and participation in sports and academic programs,” said chief executive officer Vince Scarlata.
The winners are:
Michaela White, graduate of Woodland Park High School, who intends to study education at Hastings College in Nebraska.
Westin McCorkell, WPHS graduate, who has begun an online course through Trinidad State College to be an electrical power lineman. In the fall, he will continue the program in Trinidad.
Dawson Tisdall, WPHS graduate who is enrolled in the nursing program at Colorado State University Pueblo.
Mackenzie Pappas, graduate of Cripple Creek/Victor High School, will study interior design and business at Colorado State University Fort Collins.
Kylie Gorup, WPHS graduate, will study aviation at the Direct Connect Flight Academy in Colorado Springs.
“These are just great kids,” said Anne Mallett, president of the board. “We feel so good about these kids coming up.”
The organization initiated the scholarship funds in honor of the founder, the late Greg Schilling. The scholarships are available to any Teller County high school senior.
