Increasing access to education for military-affiliated students is essential for supporting military families, facilitating transitions to civilian life, promoting career advancement, and addressing educational disparities.
For these reasons and more, Fayetteville State University is proud to remove barriers to higher education and job training for military-affiliated students, their spouses, and their dependents. Through the military scholarship, all military personnel – including active-duty personnel who are no longer eligible for tuition assistance, reservists, veterans (with the exception of those receiving CH 31 and CH 33 benefits), members of the National Guard, and their legal dependent have the opportunity to attend FSU, a four-year university, completely tuition free.
FSU’s military tuition scholarship covers the full cost of tuition, which is $500 per year for North Carolina residents and $2,500 per year for out-of-state students. FSU provides these scholarships to honor the service and sacrifice of our nation’s service members. In addition, the application fee is also waived for active servicemembers and veterans.
Offering higher education opportunities like this helps to enhance servicemembers’ skillsets by equipping service members with the knowledge, critical thinking skills, and leadership abilities necessary to be successful in their roles. Well-educated personnel are better prepared to adapt to changing mission requirements, solve complex problems, and effectively lead teams.
Military spouses and children also benefit from increased access to education. Education can help military spouses advance their careers, build professional networks, and achieve financial security.
As part of its commitment to advancing educational pathways for military-affiliated students, FSU is honored to be the only Historically Black College and University (HBCU) to partner with AIR University, the University of the U.S. Air Force, as well as the Community College of the Air Force. Students at these U.S. Air Force institutions can seamlessly transfer into an online civilian degree program at FSU to continue their studies in areas such as computer science, criminal justice, fire and emergency services administration, interdisciplinary studies, and more.
More than just ensuring access to education, FSU works to integrate and accommodate military-affiliated students with various programs. Military-affiliated students may face unique barriers to education, including frequent relocations, financial constraints, and family responsibilities. Providing support services, flexible learning options, and financial assistance tailored to the needs of military-connected learners is important for inclusivity. One way military students have a voice at FSU are by delivering monthly presentations to the FSU faculty and staff on how to best serve their unique needs.
