Owyhee High School senior Kambrie Larson is passionate about helping children.
Larson has been selected for BoiseDev’s Great Student Award — where we pick one student each week for a $200 scholarship based on their good deeds in the community — from helping others, volunteering, and more.
Larson is the president of the Key Club — a student-led organization focused on service. This year, she worked with the club to create a project to help children buy books at the book fair who otherwise can’t afford to.
“Members from our club have brought in books and then we are selling these used books at $5 a book to other kids in our high school,” she said. “And all of the money we make from that is going to go towards the elementary school we are working with so that they can use that money for kids that aren’t able to afford a book to get a book at the book fair.”
She also interns in an elementary school class where she teaches and puts together lesson plans for the students.
Larson is heading to Eastern Oregon in the fall to study elementary education.
She said her desire to teach started with her three younger sisters.
“I’ve always been surrounded by kids, whether it be my sisters or kids in the neighborhood. And I like just entertaining their imagination for the most part,” Larson said. “Then helping my sisters with homework and that sort of thing. I like watching people learn and how they grasp a concept and they get that little light bulb.”
She said earning a scholarship means getting closer to achieving her dream.
“Getting a scholarship would mean that I have to focus less on the money aspect of attending college,” she said. “I can focus on making a difference in that community and focusing on my academics so that I can achieve my goal of being an elementary school teacher.”
