JOHNSTOWN, Pa. (WJAC) — Fast-food giant McDonald’s has awarded a local student its "Black History Makers of Tomorrow Scholarship."
In support of Black History Month, McDonald’s created the program to celebrate high schoolers by awarding outstanding students with 1-thousand dollar scholarships.
Greater Johnstown School District nominated Zoey Kurcin, who was chosen for her involvement in the community, Girl Scouts and various anti-bullying and suicide prevention groups.
They say Kurcin does it all while also balancing playing soccer and working.
“If you work, if you're involved in sports, if you are involved in a number of clubs, and if you just do a lot in your community, we want to recognize that, and that's why we created the program,” says local McDonald’s owner-operator John Coyle.
“Sometimes you feel that what you do is not that big of a deal or people don't really notice, but in reality it does. And this here proves to me that what I do for the school and myself, it has been noticed by others and my teachers,” Kurcin said.
Kurcin says she's not set on a specific college yet, but plans to get her master's degree in psychology.
