The Rotary Club of Greenville announces it will be presenting multiple scholarships this year. Any current graduating students who attended any school in Indian Valley, and who plan to pursue an academic or vocational education in an accredited four-year university, two-year community college or accredited vocational school, may apply for the scholarships.
The highest award will be a distinguished student renewable scholarship for one 2025 graduate in the amount of $1,000 per year for up to four years.
The next level will be one-year distinguished student scholarships for 2025 graduates in the amount of $500 or $1,000. The club will present as many scholarships at this level as it has funding for.
Finally, the Greenville Rotary Club will present an alumni scholarship in the amount of $1,000 to a previous graduate of an Indian Valley high school who is either continuing his or her education or going back to school to pursue an academic or vocational education. There is no age limit for this scholarship.
These scholarships may be awarded based on need or merit, reports Travis Rubke, Greenville Rotary Scholarship Committee chairman. Students who have a good academic record as well as students who have financial need are encouraged to apply.
Distinguished student scholarship applications and alumni scholarship applications must be sent to Greenville Rotary at P.O. Box 207, Greenville, CA 95947 and postmarked by Monday, May 12. Applications are available from Rubke at 530-249-1682 or rubke@frontiernet.net or from Kest Porter at 530-616-0226 or kestporter@gmail.com. Scholarships will be awarded at the high school graduation ceremony in June.
Diogenes said, “The foundation of every state is the education of its youth.” Just like Diogenes, the Rotary Club of Greenville believes in the importance of education for their local youth, said Rubke. Since June 2020, the Rotary Club of Greenville has awarded $54,000 in alumni and distinguished student scholarships to 17 different deserving students in Indian Valley.
Rotary scholarships have helped these students pursue the needed studies on their paths to becoming teachers, nurses, firefighters, dental assistants, engineers, veterinarians, business people and technicians, said Rubke. “The Rotary Club of Greenville hopes to see these young scholarship recipients one day become the foundation of their Indian Valley communities as Diogenes envisioned!”
For the past five years the Rotary Club of Greenville has been able to provide all these scholarships through generous and faithful donations made by the residents, friends and alumni of Indian Valley communities. This spirit of community and generosity has weathered COVID, Dixie Fire and challenging financial times to insure that the Scholarship Fund has the money it needs.
In its effort to support as many qualified students as possible, the Greenville Rotary Club is collecting tax-deductible donations in any amount. Any administrative or ancillary costs will be borne by the Greenville Rotary Club so that the full amount of all donations will go to students. Any business, group or individual who would like to help support this effort can send a tax-deductible donation to the Greenville Rotary Foundation Scholarship Fund at P.O. Box 207, Greenville, CA 95947. Further information is available from Rubke or Porter at the phone numbers and email addresses listed above.
