HENDERSON, Texas — Henderson ISD trustees approved on Tuesday the formation of a districtwide fishing team for students.
The Henderson Fishing Team is open to both boys and girls and currently there are eight high school students and three middle school students. This addition is the first time that HISD has an officially recognized competitive fishing team.
Many students have already competed in fishing tournaments already. Mike Dillinger, a Henderson Middle School teacher who has extensive experience in the fishing industry and tournament competition, is leading the team. He previously coached a successful high school fishing team at another Texas school district.
“I’m excited for these students and for the opportunity to build a program that can provide them with great experiences and even scholarship opportunities,” Dillinger said.
Their first season is already underway and students are competing in up to seven tournaments this year. Competitive fishing can lead to scholarship awards for high school students. Some of these tournaments award tens of thousands of dollars in college scholarships over their four years of high school.
The district does expect the fishing team to grow in the coming years.
