Hard work and dedication pay off.
And it will earn you coveted spots at places such as Princeton, UC Berkeley, UCLA, the University of Pennsylvania and Barnard College, along with the respect and admiration of many. After years of late nights, weekends spent studying, juggling sports/community service projects and everyday teen years, 17 Chaffey Joint Union High School District seniors have been honored for their commitment to academic success.
During a festive ceremony before a recent district regular meeting, Chaffey College Trust administrators proudly distributed scholarships ranging from $500 to $1,500.
CJUHSD Superintendent Mat Holton served as emcee and shared a slide show presentation about the history of the trust. The annual spring awarding of scholarships follows an equally long tradition of recognizing the efforts of local students. It dates back to the beginnings of the Inland Valley when George and William Chaffey, two of its staunchest and most adventurous founders, decided those seeking educational advancements should be rewarded. The Chaffeys were enterprising brothers and visionaries who founded the Model Colony (which would later become the city of Ontario). They also were extremely successful businessmen who believed that in order for their businesses and the community to grow, there needed to be an educated work force.
They helped establish what was once called the Chaffey College of Agriculture of the University of Southern California. It was located where Chaffey High School is now on Euclid Avenue in Ontario. George Chaffey created an endowment. It would be named the Chaffey College Trust. The scholarship program was established later in 1967 to provide awards to outstanding Chaffey district students.
Seventeen students share the same thoughts on the importance of education as did the Chaffeys. New this year, but keeping with a tradition of holding history dear, the trustees have added the names of CJUHSD superintendents, starting with Merton E. Hill, who served from 1911-1932, to the top eight scholarship awards.
The 2016 Chaffey College Trust honorees are Hannah Salazar, Colony High School, $1,500 Merton E. Hill scholarship (University of Pennsylvania); Tina Mai, Montclair High School; $1,400, Gardiner W. Spring scholarship (undecided but accepted to UC San Diego, Cal and UCLA); Elias Ruben, Rancho Cucamonga High School, $1,300, Daniel B. Milliken scholarship (UCLA); Elise Burgos, Etiwanda High School, $1,200, Allan G. Smith scholarship (undecided but accepted to UCLA and Cal); Lydia Zhong, Los Osos High School, $1,100, Mike Dirksen scholarship (Princeton); Janine Sempel, Chaffey High School, $1,000, Dean Smothers scholarship (Barnard College); Alicia Ellingson, Alta Loma High School, $900, Bette Harrison scholarship (undecided but accepted to Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, UC Santa Barbara and University of Colorado Boulder); and Rachelle Huerta, Ontario High School, $800, Barry Cadwallader scholarship (La Sierra University).
Others receiving $500 scholarships each are Travis Schey, Alta Loma High School (Cal Poly Pomona); Gema Garcia, Chaffey High School (UCLA); Robert Mikey Mastalski, Chaffey District Online High School (Boston University); Melissa Gomes, Colony High School (UCLA); Rodrick Hill, Etiwanda High School (UC Irvine); Annika Kim, Los Osos High School (Pomona College); Angelica Sabandal, Montclair High School (University of La Verne); Erikka Somera, Ontario High School (Citrus College); and Sean Sedey, Rancho Cucamonga High School (UCLA).
Trustees take great pride in their association. Many attended the ceremony. They are Rene Biane, president; Dean Smothers; Mary E. Hjorth; J.T. Waller, board member emeritus; Mike Milhiser; Gary Ovitt; Jim Frost; and Barry Cadwallader. Those who volunteered to review applications and interview students were Frost; Chuck Althouse; Richard Delman; Marci Callejo and Gil Zendejas.
