HOMER GLEN, IL — On Monday, the National Merit Scholarship Corporation announced over 800 winners of National Merit scholarships financed by U.S. colleges and universities.
One of those winners is Chesterton Academy of the Holy Family student Augustine Wilson, of Homer Glen, who received a National Merit Texas A&M University scholarship. Wilson plans to study nuclear engineering, according to the release from National Merit.
These scholarships provide between $500 and $2,000 annually for up to four years of undergraduate study, according to a release. The latest 800 winners join more than 2,900 other college-sponsored award winners who were announced in June.
This year, 149 colleges and universities sponsored 3,700 Merit Scholarship awards.
To compete for Merit scholarship awards, students had to be named semifinalists based on scores of the PSAT/NMSQT. Then, they had to submit a detailed application, write an essay, and be endorsed and recommended by a high school official.
