Titles and Treasures used books and décor sale with the SEIRMC Auxiliary is 1-5 p.m. Thursday, March 20 and 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Friday, March 21. This will be at the hospital’s east entrance in the administrative conference rooms.
The hospital auxiliary has been in operation since the 1940s.
That timeframe covers several name and regime changes, from Sacred Heart to Fort Madison Community Hospital to today’s Southeast Iowa Regional Medical Center.
Gift shop manager Dianne Hope said the auxiliary supports the hospital in many ways.
“We always do health-field scholarships. We have purchased various pieces of equipment, primarily focused on women and children,” she said. “We do various fundraisers throughout the year, we’re responsible for the gift shop.”
With Titles and Treasures sale that started on Thursday and continues through 4 p.m. today (Friday), the funds raised will be going toward scholarships.
“We hope to give five $1,000 scholarships this year,” Hope said, “to local high school students at Fort Madison, Central Lee, Keokuk, Holy Trinity Catholic.”
Most of the books and items, Hope said, comes from a former board member’s personal library.
“But I belong to a book club and several members brought in shopping bags full of books,” Hope said. “That’s been great.”
The auxiliary is always looking for new members, Hope said. Membership is currently around 40 people.
Additionally, volunteers are always welcome. Those wanting to help out can call the hospital administrative offices or they can get in touch with Hope through the gift shop.
“We have volunteers in the gift shop, we have volunteers in Physical Therapy. They’re always looking for other opportunities to use volunteers,” she said. “We have Terra Waggener, who is located at the West Burlington Campus, is in charge of volunteers. She would work with anybody who wants to, and I can take names and numbers, for sure.”
Hope said the auxiliary hopes to expand the volunteer workforce.
The auxiliary hosts other fundraisers throughout the year, including “The Nut Man,” selling nuts and candies, and Burlington’s Brown’s Shoe Fit shoe sales.
“Each of those donates a good portion of the sales to us,” she said. “It’s wonderful to be able to fund $5,000 worth from little things like this.”
