ZEELAND – Mirra Fenlon has been a multi-sport varsity athlete since her freshman year.
In four years, her talent grew in volleyball, basketball and track and field, but her future is up in the air – with her jumping.
Fenlon, a Zeeland East senior, committed to NCAA Division II national title contender Grand Valley State University for track and field.
“Their track team is awesome. Their coach (Jerry Baltes) is fun and goofy, and I love coaches like that because I am like that. So I felt I fit in well,” Fenlon said. “The girls were so inclusive and fun to be around. It felt so natural like I was always a part of their team.”

The Chix star was fifth in the long jump at the Division 1 state finals, earning all-state honors as a junior. She wasn’t sure what sport her future held until this past track season.
“I struggled with our basketball season last year and in the AAU season, so I focused on jumping, which is my favorite thing to do,” she said. “I did not think I would hit that at the state meet. Knowing I can move my PR up a foot and a half in a year is really exciting.”
And she has another spring high school season to improve upon that before heading to GVSU.
“Mirra is a natural athlete who has fallen in love with long jump,” Zeeland East track coach Josh Vork said. “That love allows her to pursue getting better at all the little things that make a great jump, most importantly being coachable.”
